Background of the Study
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems integrate core business processes into a unified system, enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making. Despite their advantages, ERP implementation is fraught with challenges, including high costs, resistance to change, and technical complexities (Monk & Wagner, 2024).
Nigerian businesses, particularly in Nasarawa State, face unique hurdles in adopting ERP systems. Limited infrastructure, inadequate technical expertise, and cultural resistance often hinder successful implementation (Adedoyin & Awosika, 2025). While ERP adoption is on the rise, many firms struggle to realize its full potential due to these challenges.
Research underscores the importance of addressing these barriers to maximize the benefits of ERP systems. This study seeks to explore these challenges and provide insights for smoother ERP implementation in Nigerian businesses (Kalu et al., 2023).
Statement of the Problem
ERP systems hold promise for improving business operations in Nasarawa State, yet their implementation remains problematic. Common issues include high initial costs, insufficient training, and resistance to change among employees. These challenges often lead to project delays, cost overruns, and suboptimal system performance.
The lack of comprehensive studies on ERP challenges specific to Nigerian businesses exacerbates the issue, leaving firms ill-equipped to address these barriers effectively. This study aims to fill that gap by providing actionable insights.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges of ERP implementation in businesses in Nasarawa State.
2. To assess the impact of these challenges on ERP project success.
3. To recommend strategies for overcoming ERP implementation barriers.
Research Questions
1. What are the challenges of ERP implementation in businesses in Nasarawa State?
2. How do these challenges impact ERP project success?
3. What strategies can help overcome ERP implementation barriers?
Research Hypotheses
1. ERP implementation challenges do not significantly affect project success in businesses in Nasarawa State.
2. There is no significant relationship between employee resistance and ERP implementation success.
3. Strategies for overcoming ERP challenges do not significantly improve implementation outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on firms in Nasarawa State implementing ERP systems. Limitations include variations in firm size, industry focus, and data availability.
